Abtract

All companies of the world are expecting that raising the value of knowledge through the Information Technology will be their new competitive power in the 2000s. This is based not only on the variations in society and science but also on the growths of two places; one is multimedia contents market and the other knowledge management market. And this base is formed as multimedia technology develops. In particular, the former has grown from ten times to one hundred times for a year, and it will play a central part in producing high added values in the 21th century.
In a investigative stage of this study, it was found that many kinds of knowledge occurred in the processes developing multimedia contents were scattered differently in designer’s mind or various outside system. Also, it could be grasped that there were problems on loss of knowledge and its injudicious uses resulting from carelessness in design knowledge management system based on various workflows. To solve the problems, We hypothesized that the scattered personal knowledge should be changed into organizational knowledge and multimedia contents design knowledge management model and the system maximizing value of design knowledge should be studied through share of knowledge and its use.

In this study, design knowledge management model is proposed through consideration and analysis of multimedia contents design knowledge base, and thus system model is set up. Verification was to embody the system in form of prototype. The detailed results run as follows.:

1. In consequence of inquiring multimedia contents knowledge base, design knowledge can be developed step by step into data, information, knowledge and wisdom. And it can be divided in its forms into explicit knowledge and tacit knowledge and led to predict knowledge through share of knowledge and its use. Also, it can be organized by a series of socialization, externalization, combination, internalization, and prediction and developed from personal knowledge to organizational knowledge through mutual converting process.

2. To suggest design knowledge management model, We researched knowledge management methods of multimedia contents companies and disclosed inefficiency of them by numerical formula. Design knowledge management is composed of six steps; that is knowledge goals, knowledge acquisition, knowledge classification, knowledge distribution, knowledge share and knowledge evaluation which are based on such core elements as contents, process and infrastructure and also on strategic, intelligent, and human elements. This is differed according to the form, possessor, location and evolution of knowledge.

3. In system setup, We set up algorithm of design knowledge object and storage model, knowledge determination model and knowledge navigation model and established knowledge category based on about one hundred methods of contents development works by researching and analyzing forms of multimedia contents workflow, so that knowledge structure model could be formed. Besides, We proposed and set up knowledge search engine model, knowledge share model, and knowledge evaluation model.

4. As the method of embodiment, We tried to improve prototype system improvement using methods as 3-Tier based Middleware, i.e., Web Application Server, ORDB, i.e., SQL server and related web technologies. The system function supported the expression of explicit knowledge and tacit knowledge occurring at workflow, that of various multimedia format, and that of meta data. Futhermore, based on knowledge map, We made change and addendum of knowledge possible, supported a chief knowledge designer of manager group, and supported knowledge forum able to share opinions about user support function and knowledge for personal knowledge’s creation and its use. In addition to these methods, We linked existing strategic systems with Intranet constructed internally and externally and Groupware. These results are provided with forms of outsourcing of DKMS(Design Knowledge Management System).

The expected value of DKMS based on multimedia content workflow proposed in this study makes designer’s efficiency of work for developement high, and promotes designer’s creativity by sharing and using all of usable organizational knowledge, and so it is possible to improve the effects of investment. Therefore, it can be used for infra of design knowledge management. Hereafter, the theoretical and experimental study for plan and its embodiment of design system which can strengthen designer’s development ability should be studied deeply, and this study is one of the basic trials in this field.
